Fatal Attack on Israeli Embassy Staff in Washington, D.C.: Safeguarding Diplomacy Law, History, and the Future of Embassy Security

On the evening of May 21, 2025, two employees of the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C.—28-year-old political officer Yaron Lischinsky and his colleague Sarah Milgrim—were fatally shot as they exited an event at the Capital Jewish Museum. Witnesses reported a lone gunman pacing outside the museum before opening fire, and chanting “Free, free Palestine” upon his arrest, according to Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith .
